Why Brands Migrate
Most Shopify DTC brands start on Mailchimp (because it's free at low volume) or Omnisend (because it's cheap). By the time they hit $500K-$1M in annual revenue, both platforms become the bottleneck. Mailchimp has weak Shopify integration, limited flow logic, and no predictive segmentation. Omnisend improves on Mailchimp but still lags Klaviyo on integration depth.
Klaviyo's pull: native Shopify events (Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Started Checkout) flow automatically into segmentation, flow triggers, and personalization. Revenue-per-email typically lifts 30-60 percent after a well-executed migration.
The 4-Phase Migration Playbook
Phase 1: Foundation (Weeks 1-2)
- Open Klaviyo account, connect to Shopify via official integration
- Verify Shopify events are flowing into Klaviyo (Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Placed Order, etc.)
- Set up DNS authentication: SPF, DKIM, DMARC. This is non-negotiable for deliverability.
- Export subscriber list from current ESP with full consent history, signup date, source attribution
- Import to Klaviyo with consent status preserved (critical for GDPR/CCPA compliance)
Phase 2: Flow Rebuild (Weeks 2-3)
- Rebuild the top 5 flows in Klaviyo first: welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back
- Do not simply copy old email content. Use the migration as an opportunity to refresh.
- Add Klaviyo-only features (predictive analytics, smart send time, dynamic content blocks)
- QA every flow with test sends to internal addresses
Phase 3: Parallel Running (Week 4)
This is the critical phase. Keep your old ESP active and your new Klaviyo account active simultaneously. Route NEW signups to Klaviyo only. Existing flow-trigger events still fire from the old ESP to catch any subscribers mid-sequence. Monitor daily for duplicates.
Phase 4: Full Cutover (Week 5-6)
- Disable flows in old ESP (don't delete yet)
- Enable all corresponding Klaviyo flows as the single source of truth
- Send a "we're updating our email experience" one-time campaign to warm the new sending IP
- Monitor deliverability daily for 14 days. Watch bounce rate and complaint rate.
